“Dana and Fortune” by Oliver Wasow, currently on display at THEODORE:Art.
When Bushwick Open Studios hits the neighborhood May 30, the hood’s artists will once again show off their workspaces well into the night. (And all hell will break loose.) A few weeks before that happens, a slew of gallerists will do the same with their galleries.
Bushwick/Ridgewood Late Night happens May 10 in concurrence with the Frieze Art Fair in Manhattan, with about 30 galleries staying open till 9 p.m. (and yes, some of them will be pouring).
The event is spearheaded by Stephanie Theodore, a Manhattan-turned-Brooklyn art dealer of about two decades who has seen a lot of changes since she launched THEODORE:Art at 56 Bogart Street. “When I opened in January of 2012 there were about 30+ galleries, now there’s over 50,” she said.
“The foot traffic has picked up so much in the last two years,” she noted, adding that “it’s to the point where there’s packs of Germans with Abercrombie & Fitch bags looking for Roberta’s.”
(Not that Theodore minds European tourists: she says they’re often more willing to come out to Bushwick than Manhattanites are.)
And it’s not just that. “Now we’re getting people who are like, ‘Yeah, I just want to open a gallery,’ and don’t have any connection to the neighborhood or to the artists in New York City.”
With Bushwick/Ridgewood Late Night, Theodore and fellow members of the Bushwick Gallery Association hope to lure newbies out to the neighborhood’s many exhibition spaces. “We’re a very friendly bunch,” she assures. “This isn’t Chelsea, we don’t have the fancy architecture and the beautiful girls at the front desk; we don’t have lines, the top names; we’re not showing Serra and Koons and you don’t have to wait on line to get marshmallows.”
There will, however, be plenty of art on the walls at these participating galleries:
