It’s late September, which, counterintuitively, means it’s time for Oktoberfest! Here are some great places to don your lederhosen, slug a gallon of lager, and sing along with traditional German drinking songs (or just make rhythmic guttural noises and act like you know the words).

The proprietor of Zum Schneider will be sporting a new look when Karneval festivities kick off tonight. As you can see from the photo at left, Sylvester Schneider has dyed his hair to resemble a soccer ball.
This year the Avenue C beer hall is merging Karneval, known as Fasching in Germany, with the upcoming World Cup. Partygoers are encouraged to dress up in outfits representing their country of choice, team up, and join restaurant staffers outfitted by Angela Wendt (award-winning costume designer for Rent) as they sing and dance to the music of Benjamin Ickies, Ambitious Orchestra, Oh! You Pretty Things, and DJ Volka Racho.

Even with a longtime CBGBs bartender and one of the founders of Brownies behind it, Dream Baby caught some scorn from old-school East Villagers when it took over the space that belonged to beloved Lakeside Lounge for over 15 years. (Knee-jerk scorn from old-school East Villagers? It’s been known to happen.) A year later, it looks like the hatchet has been buried, because the bar is all thanks-for-the-love as it celebrates its anniversary. “We are humbled and proud to have so many great friends, neighbors, and customers,” it wrote on Facebook.
To show some love back, they’re doing an open bar from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m. tonight, so can you keep the free booze rolling after beers at that .
