While some would rather #Netflixandchill, there are ways to go out and experience film that stretch above and beyond your typical movie theater or home viewing experience. Some will even “immerse” you in your favorite film, or at least they will try.
Three years after the police shut down their Bushwick gallery and party pad, brothers Sei and Ki Smith keep finding gonzo ways to show art. Last Saturday, the founders of Apostrophe NYC launched a guerrilla attack on MoMA PS1 in Queens. Sneaking in paintings with hinged dowels that they had hidden in their bags, they infiltrated the museum’s courtyard and quickly pushed the works into 12 one-inch holes in the wall, adding informational cards that mimicked the museum’s Proxy font.
The Whitney Biennial, which opens to the public this Friday, attempts for the 77th time to offer a snapshot of contemporary art in America while simultaneously acknowledging that this is just not humanly possible – particularly in the confines of one brutal uptown structure. The Whitney brought in three external curators to take on this impossible task, giving each their own floor to fill with sculpture, paintings, video, performance, printed matter and big, plush penises (note: only one floor actually includes big plush penises).
