Best Chairs in Comedy, Annoyance’s Last Night, and More Performance Picks

WEDNESDAY

(flyer via The Annoyance)

Holy Fuck Comedy Hour
Wednesday, March 29 at The Annoyance Theater, 10:30 pm: FREE

As we’ve told you previously and with heavy hearts, strange n’ mighty little basement comedy theater The Annoyance is closing at the end of the month. More specifically, it’s the theater’s last night of shows tonight. What better way to send it off than by attending one of the shows The Annoyance is most lauded for, the late-night extravaganza that is the Holy Fuck Comedy Hour. The show assembles a strong assortment of comedians from different pockets of the NYC scene and asks them to write characters, scenes, songs, and more in only one week and then perform their creations with no rehearsal. And if you’re looking for even more chuckles, there will be three different improv shows happening earlier in the evening.

Esoterica Teaser Performance

At Visana NYC, 321 1st Avenue, East Village. 11:30 doors, midnight performance; free. More info here

There isn’t much info available on this late-night performance preview at a speakeasy—it appears to be purposefully cryptic—but Esoterica’s website indicates it’s a richly-visual performance experience based to some degree on Dante’s Divine Comedy, where heaven and hell intermingle. “A portal to The Inferno will be opened,” the Facebook event declares. Well, you’ll just have to see for yourself.

Harmon Leon’s Bodyslamming for Jesus and Infiltrating Porn, for You

Show_Program
What’s it like to be a clothed extra at a porn shoot? How about a member of the most hated church in America? A carney? O.J. Simpson’s hired sidekick on a reality TV show? Harmon Leon’s gone undercover to get answers, and thank God he’s willing to do it because let’s face it, you couldn’t pay most sane people to join any of these grim demographics (welllll, maybe the porn extra, but Leon’s here to tell you you’d regret it.)

Leon has written about his adventures for VICE, published five books about them, and tours with his always-evolving one-man show, coming to The Unicorn Saturday and the Kraine Theater Tuesday. On stage he uses video and other multi-media elements to give audiences a close-up look at what it’s like to infiltrate of some of America’s most fascinating subcultures. Leon took a few minutes to chat with us about, yes, the aforementioned stunts, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg–he’s been doing this a long time.
