Tessa Skara Is a Goddess of ‘Confessional Comedy Rock’

Though she’s previously declared herself “the Courtney Love of comedy,” Tessa Skara says it would actually be more fitting to call herself the comedic Liz Phair, referring to the ’90s alt-rock musician’s confessional style. All these music comparisons aren’t pulled out of thin air, but refer to Skara and her rock music comedy cabaret creation Rock Goddess, being staged at The Duplex this Sunday.

We Hit Up Starred's Last Practice/Party Before Their Tour With Courtney Love

It’s almost 6 a.m. and Matt Koshak is playing slow melodies on a two-tiered keyboard, in the small studio where he and his girlfriend practice, record, and sometimes live. Liza Thorn, the other half of the shoe-gaze/drone duo known as Starred, lounges on a couch debating with friends whether the two young boys cuddling in the mixing booth are gay or just fucked up.

All around them: beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes, McDonald’s, and a few things we probably shouldn’t mention.
