Week in Music: Jammin’ Out With Her Clams Out, No-Fi Fitting of The Glove

(Flyer via Saint Vitus)

(Flyer via Saint Vitus)

Chain of Flowers, Bootblacks, Ritual Humor
Wednesday August 31, 8 pm at Saint Vitus: $10

With a band name like Chain of Flowers, you might be thinking, “What have you signed me up for? Some hippie girl shit?” Well, not to ruffle any feathers but this band ain’t nearly as tough as all that. Rather, imagine a pale, gothy frontdude with perfectly applied pallor and lavender lipstick about to embark on the craziest acid trip of his short little life, and you’d be somewhere close to what screams out from this Welsh post-punk outfit’s cotton-candy-pink cassette tape.

Week in Shows: Experimental Poppers and One Last Dance for the Murder Junkies

(Flyer via Lock it Down)

(Flyer via Lock it Down)

Synthetic Love Dream, David First, and Systematic Distortion Orchestra
Tuesday May 24, 9 pm at Poppers Locarno: free
Not gonna lie– and I’m really hoping that by admitting this, I’m not digging myself a grave in the cemetery for people who once-upon-a-time knew about cool shit– but I’ve never been to Poppers Locarno, and to be completely honest, I’ve never even heard of Poppers Locarno. Until now. According to the bar’s page, it’s the patron, drunken saint of Decatur Studios (a Ridgewood-based studio complex), and is known for its “drinks, chatter, edible bits and excess,” which sounds like an establishment I can totally get behind. No word on whether or not they’re keeping any actual poppers behind the bar, but there’s only one way to find out!

Week in Shows: a Set So Harsh It’s Blister-Popping & a Cyber-Industrial Reawakening

(Flyer via Aviv/ Facebook)

(Flyer via Aviv/ Facebook)

Guido, Ritual Humor, Lover’s Touch, Rubber, Decorum
Monday January 18, 8 pm at Aviv: $8

Late notice, but we know you’re looking for something to do on what’s sure to be a cold-as-hell Monday night anyway. We’re talking something that doesn’t involve drinking a bottle of wine to the face in front of How to Make a Murderer and passing out, mid-text message while you’re attempting to convince your friend that Steven Avery did do it. Rest assured this one’s not going to be outside, but last we checked it’s a good idea to wear a lil cardi and a beanie to Aviv– industrial spaces can be tres drafty, y’all. But even if you’ve got the chills, count on em being long banished by the time the second opener, Rubber, takes the stage.

You know how leftovers are sometimes better than the meal was in its original form? That’s also true for CMJ apparently. It seems like some seriously great bands and musicians are lingering around town, taking breaks from their major projects and toying with new ones, old friends, and completely different sounds altogether. You too can dabble in all three this week (and beyond). See what we’ve got for you below.

Shows: Music to Deliver Us From Rain and Visits From Beyond the Grave

11263139_815373398545320_2112967550397373879_o

Bushwick Open Studios speedily approacheth, which means we’re gonna get a massive shot in the vein of a whole lot of art and party and free beer, but mostly party — let’s be real. We’re guessing that means you won’t have time over the weekend to catch any shows, but that doesn’t mean they’re letting up. So, you should probably make time. And what better way to poo poo this meddlesome rain aside than getting to your local venue and enjoying this twisted thing called life?
