A Look at Red Hook Lobster Pound’s New Rockaway Clam Bar

(Photo: Rockaway Clam Bar’s Instagram)

Earlier this month, when we shared the lineup of food vendors at Riis Park Beach Bazaar, we noted that one of the newcomers this season would be Rockaway Clam Bar. Now we have some more information to share about the seafood purveyor that’ll take over for Wildfeast as that vendor focuses on its new Long Beach restaurant. Turns out that the folks behind Rockaway Clam Bar, which soft-opened yesterday and will fully open this weekend, are Susan Povich and Ralph Gorham of Red Hook Lobster Pound. The couple, who split their time between Red Hook and Rockaway, are focusing on the sort of New England-style grub you might find at Bigelow’s Fried Clams, the throwback clam shack over in Rockville Center, Long Island. Think clam rolls, clam-strip sliders, clam chowder, and peel-and-eat shrimp.

This Weekend, Score A Free Snow Cone And Maybe Free Full Moon Fest Tickets

If you haven’t noticed, it’s been hot. Sweet and icy treats can be a good way to combat this, but let’s face it. Ice cream, milkshakes, and smoothies can get expensive. Air conditioning is pricey too, and you can only hang out in chilly coffee shops for so long until you start to get grumpy stares.

Starting this Friday until August 6, the folks at music fest Full Moon Festival will be going around to various locations in the city, doling out free (yes, that’s right) snow cones. Revel in the sweet nostalgia of this simple frozen treat and and try to avoid brain freeze from crunching on ice too quickly as you seek refuge from sweat in what is really just syrup poured onto literal ice. Hey, it’s tasty. As a way of spicing up the typical snow cone fare, they’re offering a special “Blue Moon” flavor (no, not the beer) which combines pineapple and blueberry in a refreshing blend.

A Look at WildFeast at Riis, Serving Beachside Fish Tacos Through the Winter

(Photo: Daniel Maurer)

Last month when we brought word that the folks at Riis Park Beach Bazaar had decided to keep slinging drinks through the winter, and that one of its vendors, WildFeast, would be continuing on as a proper restaurant, it seemed too good to be true: year-round food and drink smack dab in the middle of Jacob Riis Park? During the off-season the place is pretty much the dictionary definition of “desolate,” with howling winds that will instantly peel off whatever is left of that summer tan.

We’re stuck between seasons here but in the best way possible, experiencing the best of fall and summer all between sun up and sun down. That’s why this week we’re bringing you everything from a sizzling time at the very last Riis Park Beach Bazaar show by the water to a dark rager deep inside the belly of our favorite metal bar. Jump for deets.

Shows: a Fest For Grade-A Grating Noise and a Change-Up at Nothing Changes

Our only utterance of advice for this week: pack em in, kids. If you’re as unsettled about the end of summer as we are, consider taking some of that aggression out at any number of these shows (there’s enough punk to go around for all of yous) or, better yet, gaze at some of these truly gnarly noise-makers in awe of frustrations much deeper than your own. Best, best, best of all, though: see what happens after a legendary rapper denounces her medium but returns to the stage anyway for something altogether new. Cheers to spiteful finales.

How a Pre-Pride Party Emerged From a Call to ‘Take Back Riis Park’

When the Brooklyn Night Bazaar announced that it was summering in Rockaway, not everyone greeted its Riis Park Beach Bazaar with open arms. Some members of the LGBTQ community that had long gathered on the beach worried that the trendy new concessions might change the scene, and nearly 100 people joined a Take Back Riis Park group on Facebook. But last weekend, queer artist and musician Richard Kennedy threw a couple of pre-pride parties at the Bazaar to insure a “connection between all communities” — and also just to have fun. Watch our video to see how it went down.

Hear a New Dead Stars Track Before Their Free Beach Show

(Photo: Susan Hunt)

Last time B+B faves Dead Stars graced us with a new song, it was via a music video in which they cruised from Williamsburg to Rockaway. Next Saturday you can make that same trip to see them do a free show at the new Riis Park Beach Bazaar. By way of road music, here’s their new single, “Calm Punk.” This one is a little less Lotion/Dino Jr. and little more Weezer. If you can’t catch them next week, the grunge revivalists will also be playing a bevy of local shows in the coming weeks.
