The East Village has lost one of its enchanting al fresco dining spots, as Barbone has been evicted after a decade on Avenue B. The Italian restaurant was opened in 2006 by Alberto Ibrahimi, who prided himself on his fresh ingredients and handmade pasta, and served as a congenial host. My old Grub Street colleague Josh Ozersky, “King of Avenue C,” wrote that the “underpriced, ambitious East Village trattoria has some of the best pasta and wine values in town.” He paid the enoteca a memorable visit in a video for Vice’s Munchies.
Memorial Day weekend has officially arrived, and while many of us plan to head to the beach to check out the Coney Art Walls, Riis Park Beach Bazaar, the Rockaway boardwalk concessions, and this season’s newcomers to Beach 96th Street, others are way too lazy to take that hour-long train ride and are keeping it local. After all, there’s a lot going on here in town: from a theatrical prom to pin shopping to outdoor movies to the newly reopened Nowadays and Seaport Smorgasburg, to boozing on floating bars in Chelsea, Greenpoint, and Tribeca.
On Friday we heralded the return of our favorite booze boat with a post titled, “What About Bobbing? The Frying Pan Reopens Today.” Pretty much no one appreciated our hilarious What About Bob? reference, but that’s okay– we’ve already moved on, because another one of Manhattan’s great docked drinkeries has reopened for the season.
If you’ve been awake for the past 48 hours or so, you’re probably well aware that it is, in fact, the month of July which means some of you, dearest readers, may be wondering, “Where the hell is that floating barge bar you promised me?” Rest assured, the Brooklyn Barge Bar is not lost at sea — rather she’s docked and nearly ready for seafaring (we jest, the barge itself will remain at the landing, historic boats and scuba excursions will do the launching). “It looks like it’s far from being finished, but it’s actually really close,” owner Will Drawbridge explained. “There’s some final bits of paperwork to do and then we’ll be done.”
Just nine months after North Brooklyn Farms dismantled its plot at Havemeyer Park, it’s returning at a new location and hosting some al fresco, farm-to-table dinners.
Here it is, folks. If you’re looking to plunk down on the avenue and get a buzz on while your fellow denizens scurry to and fro as if there’s more to life than slurping oysters in God’s great outdoors, this is the only map you’ll need all summer. Give it a gander to find most every bar and restaurant with sidewalk seating in the B+B domain. And go ahead and bookmark this bad boy, because we’ll be adding to it throughout the summer to make it still more comprehensive. It’s like the Boss said: when you’re out in the street, you feel all right.

Take From Dusk Till Dawn and National Lampoon’s Vacation; subtract Chevy Chase, John Candy, Quentin Tarantino and bloodthirsty vampires; add Jennifer Aniston as a stripper and Dodgeball director Marshall Rawson Thurber, and you’ve got We’re The Millers.

All Nick Suarez, founder of the wildly popular Food Experiments, ever wanted to do was hang out in a backyard, wear shorts and grill stuff. And now he’s living that dream every Thursday through Sunday night behind a Williamsburg pub.
Suarez has quietly launched “Backyard at Iona,” a charm-filled shanty with a tin ceiling, running water, walls that double as chalkboards and a utensil rack attached to a tree. The grill menu may change weekly depending on the chef’s mood, but he’ll always offer the basics: burgers, brats, sausages, and side salads, like potato and cucumber.
