The wall, on Houston Street and Bowery, has featured work by artists like Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf in the past and is now host to David Choe’s mural, completed last week.

How the Bombay Beach Biennale Brought Art to a Toxic Wasteland

Just a few hours south of Los Angeles there’s a tiny desert town called Bombay Beach– though its geographically close at hand to many millions of people, it might as well be another world.

One of several beachside settlements on the shores of the Salton Sea, the town was once a booming resort spot popular during the prosperous post-War years when more than a million vacationers traveled there annually. But the sea– actually a sprawling, shallow lake– and the dusty desert expanse around it, have since lost their appeal, slipped out of range, and essentially vanished from the minds of many Southern California residents. “I’d never heard of it,” filmmaker and LA native Tao Ruspoli explained in a recent interview.

Browse This ‘Nude Thrift Shop’ For Some Naked, Oozing Painted Weirdness

Its awning says Second Time Around is a thrift shop, but it doesn’t have all that much clothing on its shelves, and this weekend there won’t be any on its staff, either. On Saturday night, workers at the Bushwick store will actually be figure models, performing naked as part of artist Michael Alan’s Nude Thrift Shop. They’ll be painted by the artist until the place becomes a “naked, oozing painted weirdo shop” — and to top it all off, the backyard will host “a kiddie-pool naked dance party.”

Checking Out the Coney Art Walls As They Near Completion

While Bushwick Collective has been hogging all the attention lately (even from local cops), a series of equally impressive murals have been going up these past few weeks in Coney Island, where the New York art world’s prodigal son Jeffrey Deitch has called on some big names to paint a couple dozen walls dotting a concrete lot shared with Coney Smorgasburg.
