East Village’s Curry Row Loses Two More Indian Spots, Gains a ‘Casual Korean’

There’s more upheaval on the East Village’s Curry Row, where Banjara and Brick Lane Curry House moved away in recent years. Earlier today, workers were spotted moving fixtures out of Mitali East, the Indian restaurant that, having been open since 1973, was the oldest existing eatery still on East 6th Street, between Second and First Avenues. A sign on the door reads, “We lost our lease” and directs customers to sister spot Haveli.

A couple of Chipotle-esque South-Asian chains are coming to the NYU area. This summer the owner of Desi Shack, which serves skewer-grilled Indian-Pakistani food in Murray Hill, will open a takeout joint at 145 Fourth Avenue, near East 13th Street — right next to Dos Toros.

Reel Psyched: Our Northside and L.E.S* Film Festival Picks

With the Lower East Side Film Festival in full swing in Manhattan and the Northside Festival’s film program popping off tonight in Brooklyn, it’s a good time to be a film buff.

At the L.E.S* Film Festival, which kicked off Thursday and continues through the weekend, offerings from up-and-coming directors are judged by a panel of guests including celebrities like Judah Friedlander (“30 Rock”) and Dan Janvey (“Beasts of the Southern Wild”). The audience favorite gets a $2,000 check from Vimeo (ahem, Bedford + Bowery’s video player of choice).
