Here’s How to Do Bushwick Open Studios This Weekend

There’s been a bit of a stir surrounding this year’s Bushwick Open Studios. Firstly, they’ve been moved to this coming weekend instead of their usual summertime. There’s been a changing of hands in regards to who’s in charge, and supposedly a renewed focus on connecting with longtime locals rather than just hip, social-media-savvy (mostly white) artists and parties sponsored by Tumblr. The time has come to see how things have changed, and how they might’ve stayed the same. The jam-packed weekend can get overwhelming. Aside from all the artist studios that’ll be open (reason for the season), here are some highlights that might be worth your while.

Tonight, loft apartment turned art gallery Club 157 will be transformed into a tribute to the life of Mary of Cain.

Who’s that lady?, you ask.

Well, she’s the creation of multidisciplinary artist and model Jane Cogger, who birthed the character four years ago when she wanted to write more from a place of fiction, rather than autobiography.

Most people want to keep their personal space and their workspace separate. But for Heather Rae Hatton, the two are one and the same. Her newly-opened East Williamsburg gallery and coworking space Club 157 just happens to also be her loft apartment—talk about a short commute. The fresh-faced gallery has had one show already, and tonight is the opening reception for its first themed group show, “Dreamcatching.”
