In 2011, Bushwick-based prop master Jan-Luc Van Damme began crafting the Bushwick Board Game, a Game of Life-meets-Cards Against Humanity “silly underground legend” that was never launched per se, but did land in a select few loft spaces and bars like The Levee, Brooklyn Fireproof (RIP), and Boobie Trap. Because “the hood changes so quickly,” Van Damme has updated the handmade games with new materials every year. And now, for the first time, he has introduced Bushwick Board Game 1.0 to the Apple App Store.
Boobie Trap still holds the record for most synthetic breasts in a bar, but last night Birdy’s and Happyfun Hideaway hosted the real deal. Boobs of Bushwick, the group known for going topless around the neighborhood and uploading shots to Tumblr, bounced into Birdy’s for some foosball at around 11 p.m., followed by Jenga at Happyfun Hideaway.
The people behind Boobie Trap, most likely Brooklyn’s first and only boob-themed bar, are taking over their Bushwick block. Back in January, the owners of Verde Coal Oven Pizza (what used to be something of a neighborhood institution many moons ago before it slid slowly into apathy) put the casual Italian restaurant up for sale. Kristen North and Paul King bought the place, gut-renovated it, and turned it into Pizza Party, which they described to me as “Boobie Trap’s little brother.”
Much like beloved Pumps, the vast majority of boobs at Bushwick’s newest bar are synthetic– but that’s about the only quality these establishments share. Boobie Trap is actually a respectable joint that very likely won’t make you feel creepy and exploitative after spending five minutes inside. In fact, with its cheap beer and reasonably priced food, you might end up staying for a while.
