Growing up black in 21st century America can have its own sense of vertigo–the president is African-American but police brutality and incarceration still disproportionately affect men with your skin color. In his debut book, Invisible Man, Got the Whole World Watching: A Young Black Man’s Education, Mychal Denzel Smith (Knobler Fellow at The Nation Institute) tries to make sense of the political and social landscape he’s grown up in and come to terms with his own education. He’ll be joined by fellow writers Ashley C. Ford and Hanif Willis-Abdurraqib.

Sure, Facebook is launching Instant Articles, and Apple News is also on the way — but a Bushwick resident is hoping the app he just launched at Northside Festival will be the future of news consumption.
“The big boys want to host your content and we don’t think that’s right,” said Trond Werner Hansen at the launch of Kite yesterday. The free iOS app allows you to share articles without the interference of algorithms and to view articles shared by those you follow without the clutter of sponsored content. In short, it’s “Instagram for news,” said Hansen.

Williamsburg Pool Party Maven Launches a Video Mixing App for the Symple-Minded

When Williamsburg app developer Alex Kane released the beta version of his app Sympler last September, he expected about 3,000 downloads. What he got was more than 80,000 downloads and a nod from Apple Japan as one of the best apps of 2013, alongside Vine and Instagram. Not bad for beta. Today, Sympler version 1.0 launches in the Apple Store.
