It used to be that throwback drinking meant quaffing Prohibition-era cocktails and Hemingway sippers. But these days, we’re seeing an emphasis on even older traditions, and a resurgence of traditional techniques that have long fallen out of use. Mead, the fermented honey drink that was made as early as 7000 BC in China and was drunk in North Europe during the Bronze Age, is making a comeback that started in the homebrew community and grew outward. And in just a few short months, Williamsburg will be home to one of the largest mead brewing operations in the country.
We like the way bars are going these days– which is to say backwards. In the past year we’ve been given a slew of cheeky tiki bars– there’s El Cortez, plus Dromedary on the way. But unless you’re willing to risk colada-induced diabetes, or you’ve turned into an actual diamond-encrusted yacht because you’ve been price gouging HIV patients, downing elaborate bourbon-filled ceramic shark heads like the ones at Mother of Pearl on the reg isn’t gonna fly. Instead, pony up to Ridgewood’s newest old man bar, Bonus Room, and order yourself a sensible drink.
New Year, new you– is exactly what’s on Alex and Olena’s mind right now. What’s the best cure for the holiday blues? Well, the girls of our favorite reality web series, The Bedford Stop, know full-well it’s another holiday, that’s what. And where else to go act like a total nit and blend in seamlessly? Florida, duh! In this new episode premiering exclusively on B+B, they aim to hit the beaches, lap up frozies at any number of Margaritavilles, and twerk at whatever’s left of the Club Paris [Hilton] empire. Yes, it’s actually the year 2007 in Florida from here until eternity. But hold up– it may be hard to imagine, but Alex hints that an attempt to “detox” might be in her future. Olena’s reaction? In short: “Ew.” We couldn’t agree more.
I was in the grips of a full-on Sunday hangover, on a caffeine-addled regret-stroll through East Williamsburg, when I locked eyes with a bar I’d never seen before, The Topaz. I wondered if the name, bestowed on this cocktail and small plates establishment, might be a play on “tapas.” Perhaps. But it also betrays the spirit of the place: a glimmering but none-too-fancy oasis in an otherwise spartan stretch of the neighborhood.
The other week, we were contacted by an NYU freshman currently living in residence. This student expressed their concern regarding the overwhelming number peers being carted off to the hospital each weekend for drinking excessively. We contacted Philip Lentz, the university’s Director of Public Affairs, who informed us that students who are taken to hospital as a result of drinking are required to attend a clinical intervention with a trained counsellor as well as participate in an alcohol education workshop. Though it is clear that the university is taking the necessary steps to mitigate this issue, perhaps there are some steps the students can take as well… And thus, an open letter from a student to their peers:
