Jay Nir was chilling in a café in Amsterdam some years ago when he noticed that the person to his right was sipping coffee while the person to his left was quaffing wine. He’s hoping that ever-so-European comingling of caffeine cravers and liquor lovers will be a common sight at River Coyote, which he opened today on the Lower East Side.

Ok, so I might be outing myself as a giant lame by admitting this but, until I came across this mind-blowing feature presentation, I had no idea that “détournement” is actually, like, its own thing. Basically, that’s just a fancy word for (re)appropriated movies that have been drastically altered and yet retain some of the original characteristics of their source films which tend to be instantly recognizable classics. The result is a chunky, weird-tasting at first, but then loveably gritty combination of parody/homage, familiar/totally alien, nostalgic/apocalyptic– or post-modern upchuck that could trick your grandma and scare the kids. In other words, it’s very punk.

Sinister and sultry variety show Bordello, hosted by Madame Vivien V, features a slew of out-there performers who will brighten up your night with acts of drag, dance, performance art, fire, and more. On the lineup this time is B-boy and boylesque dancer Eckszooberante and drag performer Chris of Hur, along with performer Amber Von Toxn and Heather, who appears to proudly carry the title of “The Worst.” This iteration of the show, which has been billed as “punk rock meets burlesque meets performance art,” has a psychedelic bent to it, so who knows what sensorial adventures your eyes will be asked to behold. Let the aptly-named DJ Penny Lane spin you into color-crazed oblivion, fix your eyes to the stage, and trip out.

Perhaps you’ve noticed that, since sometime late last week, almost everywhere you turn, people are in a rather dour mood. Could it be that nothing feels quite so exciting after watching a limousine burst into flames? Is it all downhill from here? True, Inauguration Day was pretty insane for a lot of people, and as good-quality club drugs have taught us, even the most gorgeously wild highs will inevitably come crashing down.
From what I understand, civic engagement is somewhat different than partying all night, but then again, getting back on the protest pony is just as taxing as snapping out of a hangover stupor– in both cases, technology makes things easier, but also harder. Why not just retweet some sick “Down with Prez Cheeto” slogan? Or if you’re really not in any hurry, there’s always Shia LaBeouf’s anti-Trump livestream— just be sure to get there sometime within the next four years.
But perhaps techy slacktivism really grinds your gears. Maybe you’re convinced that you have more to contribute than turning your body into an object of Monsieur LaBeouf’s amusement, but let’s be real, acting like a Shepard Fairey mural will just get you into trouble. (See, even Shia LaBeouf is not immune.) So how does one avoid either doing too little or going too far, both of which have equally great potential for compounding our current nightmare exponentially forever and ever? “How do you cover a beast like Donald Trump?” That question, posed by NYU journalism professor and press critic Jay Rosen, was at the heart of a talk last night between New Yorker editor David Remnick and the top editors of Huffington Post, Slate, and Univision.
The tell-tale row of white police vans lined the periphery Washington Square Park, hinting at some dissent needing to be contained in the distance. As usual, chanting masses converged closer to the nucleus of the park, as if calling for political triomphe below the gleaming white arch. “No ban, no wall, no prisons, no pipeline!” Drums cracked, dancing erupted, and fists rose tall. Trump has occupied the highest office for under a week, and already, his executive actions are posed to threaten the lives of millions of Americans, just as promised.
Yesterday, the MTA board voted to keep the price of a single subway ride at $2.75 during 2017, but raise the price of each unlimited pass option. The fare increased go into effect on March 19. [Gothamist]
