How 6 Practitioners of the Dark Arts View Halloween

(Photo: Catland website)

Molly Burkett (Photo: Catland website)

With so many wild parties going on tonight, it’s easy to forget that Halloween originates from the ancient festival of Samhain, celebrated by the Celts 2,000 years ago. Before their new year on November 1, they thought the boundary between the living and dead would deteriorate and ghosts could appear on Earth. So, how do today’s pagans and occultists view the holiday as it’s celebrated today? We asked some of them to find out.

We Hit Up Starred's Last Practice/Party Before Their Tour With Courtney Love

It’s almost 6 a.m. and Matt Koshak is playing slow melodies on a two-tiered keyboard, in the small studio where he and his girlfriend practice, record, and sometimes live. Liza Thorn, the other half of the shoe-gaze/drone duo known as Starred, lounges on a couch debating with friends whether the two young boys cuddling in the mixing booth are gay or just fucked up.

All around them: beer, wine, liquor, cigarettes, McDonald’s, and a few things we probably shouldn’t mention.

Bushwick Artists: Maybe We Should All Just Buy a Building Together?

Six years ago, Josefina Blanc, a former photography editor at Art & Commerce, found herself priced out of Bushwick when the rent on the 10,000 sq. ft. loft shot up from $2,500 to $8,000. Her husband, a performance artist now represented by a gallery in Chelsea, had spent years renovating the space with the understanding that, in exchange, the rent would remain stable, but efforts to appeal to their landlord were in vain. The couple decided to call it quits and moved to South Carolina that year.

The secret seems to be out about Secret Project Robot’s new sister establishment. “Yesterday, I made a batch of vegan pulled pork and it sold out in about three hours,” Rachel Nelson told Bedford + Bowery.

Happyfun Hideaway’s early success after just a few weeks in business seems to have come from a combination of word-of-mouth and a straight-up irresistible atmosphere (just look at our slideshow). The bar offers mixed drinks and reasonably priced beers, plus what the owners describe as a “slightly healthier version of Americana bar food” (so far, offerings have included jackfruit with barbecue sauce, mac and cheese, Frito pie and cheeseburgers).

If you’re in the habit of walking home alone while checking your Facebook feed with just one eye open, it might be time to wise up: police in Williamsburg and Greenpoint are on the lookout for a man who has robbed five area residents in the last two weeks as they returned from bars in the evening.

“He’s only been striking between 10:30 p.m. and 1 a.m.,” said Stefan Komar, captain of the 94th Precinct. “I don’t know why, but he has a schedule.”

Yesterday, Wes Mapes and his business partners opened AP Coffee on a once desolate block that, until recently, had been known more for its murals. He thinks it was a good call. “This street is going to be the street off [the Jefferson] stop, for sure,” he told Bedford + Bowery. “It may even be the premiere street in all of Bushwick, even above a lot of places off the Morgan stop.” (He may be on to something: the sister bar of Welcome to the Johnsons is set to open just a block away.)

Welcome to Bushwick, Welcome to the Johnsons!

(Photo: Brando Skyhorse)

Max Fish isn’t the only Lower East Side bar that’s Brooklyn bound. Welcome to the Johnsons is opening a sister spot in Bushwick. Unlike the Rivington Street den of depravity, it’ll be called simply The Johnsons. But don’t worry – it’ll still be welcoming. More so than the scruffy original, it could be argued, since it’s about four times the size.

The offshoot, at 369 Troutman Street, will feature an open-air patio that’ll be in full swing till closing time, said owner Lisa Gartner, who also co-owns Sweet Paradise on the Lower East Side.

Help This Man Realize His Trippy Dream Of Staging ‘Wizard Of Oz’ in Bushwick

Somewhere over in Bushwick the L train rides; artists and Hasids, poets and dreamers, ride their bikes.

So goes a dreamy, surreal version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” that may some day appear in “Bushwick the Musical the Movie,” an in-the-works film set in the neighborhood and modeled almost entirely on “The Wizard of Oz.” John Martino, a 55 year-old former IT specialist, is trying to raise a staggering $2.5 million to get the movie made.

Already craving more Bedford + Bowery in your life? We thought so. Follow all our exploits on Instagram as we photograph, filter and #hashtag all the cultural goodies on offer in our favorite neighborhoods.

This weekend we went to a sprawling indoor-outdoor party at 299 Meserole thrown by masters of debauchery Bang On NYC (yep, we did a lot of Banging this weekend). In the interest of supporting our fellow ravers, we’d like to refer everyone to this Craigslist Missed Connection. Good luck, shirtless tall guy. We’re rooting for you.

#Nofilter folks, we love you, too. Submit your shots to our Flickr group and we’ll share the standouts with our readers.
