Get Down: An East Village Radio Show Is DJing a Williamsburg Subway Station

Screen Shot 2013-07-17 at 12.20.50 PMThe nouveau newsstand at the Metropolitan stop just got even funkier — and we’re not talking about your typical subway-station funk. The guys from Chances With Wolves — the awesome and dizzyingly eclectic show on East Village Radio — will DJ there tomorrow at 7pm, so do take out your earbuds when you’re transferring from the L to the G. This is hands-down the best thing to happen to the subway system since countdown clocks.

Bushwick Elucidations Teaches You How to Dougie

Time for the latest episode of “Bushwick Elucidations,” the BK-based advice column we’ve shamelessly appropriated as our own. This week, Tigre and Cricket teach us how to pronounce Thames and also how to Dougie.

When you’re done with that little lesson, check out the latest webisode of “Ajay,” which also dropped today. In it, the East Village’s own Ajay Naidu tells us how his naked girlfriend and Patrick Stewart helped him get over the trauma of balding.

Apparently, Padma Lakshmi Wants NYU to Pack Its Knives and Go

(Photo: Randi Eichenbaum)

Whelp, this land-use matter just got a whole lot sexier! Opponents of NYU’s plan to expand in Greenwich Village have gotten a few more bold-face names behind their lawsuit against the school.

A rep for Faculty Against the Sexton Plan (one of the groups suing the school) tells us Padma Lakshmi of “Top Chef” (and of the East Village) will join Village-based authors Peter Carey and Joseph McElroy in the audience at State Supreme Court on Thursday.

When we first brought word that rockers Bobby Drake (The Hold Steady, w/o.), Frank Bevan (w/o.), Rob Pope (Spoon), Eric Odness (The Wanted, Primitive Weapons) were teaming up to open a Greenpoint bar that nodded to the neighborhood joints of Minneapolis, there were plenty of demands from B+B readers. One asked “Must there be tvs?”; another wrote, “I hope they show hockey games.” Another asked, “Can you please import all of the Midwestern guys into the bar as well?”

Speaking of iconic gurgitators who were conspicuously absent from this year’s hot-dog eating contest, Takeru Kobayashi wasn’t at Coney this year, but he did down 67 dogs in 10 minutes at Hester Street Fair’s hot-dog eating contest, and now – right now! – he’s grilling hot dogs in Bryant Park.

And not just any dogs – The Tsunami debuted his own line of Kobi Dogs at the 4th of July contest and he’s selling them until 10pm tonight ($3, plus fifty cents with avocado or cheese) during tonight’s screening of “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.”

Watch This Guy Turn a Busy East Village Intersection Into a Skate Park

Sure, our video of skaters shredding with Citi Bikes (Shiti Bikes?) got a bunch of likes on Facebook but not everyone was down with it. Commenter Dennis wrote, “i don’t get this, how is this funny? that is the thing i don’t like about skaters effing public property and acting like they deserve to do so.”

Well, if he didn’t dig that, he won’t dig this: on Saturday, this young turk had his way with the intersection of Second Avenue and East Seventh Street. Every time the light turned he’d try to clear this mess. And he actually did it once — after our camera died, of course. Still, the video’s worth a look.

Now who’s going to shred this “epic sinkhole” on Eldridge?

What a Shiti Thing to Do…

20130708-094727.jpg

A few weeks ago, writer-photographer Kyle Dean Reinford tweeted, “surprised I haven’t seen an easily applicable sticker that changes citibike to shitibike.”

Et voilà! Last week we spotted just such a sticker, and now someone has gone and shitified the bikes themselves, at the station at Bedford and Metropolitan. Reactions on Twitter range from “LOL this is hilarious” to “get a fucking life.”

Uh-Oh: ‘Thurstons’ Are Invading Downtown, and NOT Thurston Moores

(Photo: Joshua Kristal)

While Williamsburg-Greenpoint copes with Murray Hill types pouring into Berry Hill, downtown Manhattan is dealing with its own infestation: “gaggles of Muffys and Thurstons wearing Lilly Pulitzer are invading neighborhoods below 14th Street,” The Times giddily reports. The trend may just “portend the end of Manhattan’s few remaining bastions of bohemia.” (Uh-oh: better tell the guy who’s “one of the East Village’s last standing bohemians.”)

Here now are the obligatory cringe-inducing quotes.

No, this isn’t the actual shuttle. (Courtesy: Surf Shuttle NYC)

As mentioned in our 4th of July rundown, the Rockabus now has another competitor in the Beach Bus. But what if you think Rockaway is so over now that it has a haute motel and no hard liquor on the beach, and a trip to Coney is out of the question because you’re scared the Astrotower might fall?

Enter the Surf Shuttle.

Earlier this week we noted that Caracas had reopened in Rockaway with a new sidekick at its Beach 106th Street concession stand.

Now a Parks Department spokesperson confirms that Rockaway Taco won’t be doing flautas at the 97th Street stand this year. But these places will be back by tomorrow (in fact, they’re opening today, according to this tweet from Motorboat and the Big Banana).
