Perhaps your idea of a night out at Greenpoint’s Bar Matchless includes drunkenly windmill punching your way through the crowd, loudly sighing when you realize that literally every seat in the house is taken, then dodging skeevy dudes who try to buy your drinks, and having to resort to physically batting them away when they throw money at the bartender anyway, apparently having misinterpreted your “shove off” through the loud din of god-knows-what kind of music to mean “let’s shove” (or maybe you’re one of those skeevy fellows– in which case, uh, sorry).

If all this sounds scary-familiar, then maybe it’s time you see another side of Matchless. Actually, there’s no better time than the present (i.e. tonight, at 8 pm) to get your foot in the door on a night when that foot is much less likely to get groped.

Every Monday night, the bar’s home to Broken Comedy, an underground-ish standup series that maintains both big-time appeal and cult cred (we’ve talked your ear off about it in the past). Co-hosted by Mike Denny, Nimesh Patel, and, more recently, Michael Che (Saturday Night Life), the show manages to attract up-and-comings and heavy-hitters alike, including Trevor Noah (heir of the The Daily Show‘s desk) and Hannibal Buress (Broad City), as well as New York City comedy-scene regs like Rachel Feinstein (Last Comic Standing).

But tonight (Monday May 23) Broken Comedy’s drawing in a regular of a different sort. Get thee to Matchless where the comedy show’s team will be celebrating the release of Meet the Regulars– the book incarnation of B+B’s own column, The Regulars, in which Joshua D. Fischer interviews Brooklyn residents about the bars, shops, restaurants, and even yoga studios that function as their homes-away-from-home, their refuges from the the shock of city life, and the places they can’t quit. (Full disclosure: this writer took some photos for the book.) In fact, Josh considers himself a regular at Broken Comedy, which we trust you’ll read all about in the book.

Even if you’re not exactly the literary type (wait, you’re reading right now aren’t you?), we promise that you’ll super enjoy the Meet the Regular‘s edition of Broken Comedy– seeing as this’ll be a less talk-talk affair and a more LOL kind of happening. And if it so happens that you are the learnin’ type, then pick up a copy of the book and you’ll earn yourself a free beer. Oh, and admission’s free no matter what (but don’t tell your date that).

Several comics featured in the book will be on deck, including Saturday Night Live‘s Sasheer Zamata, who used to hang out at Enid’s (right across the street) all the time before moving to greener pastures in Fort Greene. Jeffrey Joseph will also be making an appearance, along with Seaton Smith (The Nightly Show) and Michelle Wolf (The Daily Show). It’s bound to be a killer time.
