You couldn’t avoid bumping into falafel in downtown Manhattan even if you tried. Mamoun’s, Mimi’s, and Hummus & Pita Co. are just some of the hummus slingers that have recently expanded their footprints to satisfy your chickpea-centric cravings. Joining this cadre is Moemen, a new Middle Eastern/Mediterranean shop on Allen Street, which opened last Thursday and is serving up all the usual suspects: falafel, shawarma, koefte, hummus, chicken kebab, baba ganoush, and more.
Moemen has hit a slight bump in the road on its first week. Manager Said Aboran explained that the space (formerly home to Latin American hot-dog joint Los Perros Locos and then briefly LESpace gallery) unfortunately didn’t have any gas yet, which is why Moemen hasn’t been able to properly offer its entire menu yet. “We’re opening slowly,” he said. They’re cooking most of their meals on an electric grill, but hope to fire up the shawarma spit next week, after a ConEd inspection.
The menu starts at $6 and up for falafel sandwiches, with the most expensive dish ($14) being the grilled salmon with za’atar and herbs. Although there’s some seating, Moemen looks like it’ll be a takeout/delivery favorite for the late-night crowds.
Moemen, 201 Allen Street, nr. Houston St., Lower East Side. Open Sun-Thur, 11am-3am, Fri-Sat 11am-5am. 646-918-6877.
