We ran into Adam Dare graffiting the side of the Avalon Chemists building at Second Avenue and Houston this morning. Steve Stoppert, who owns the building as part of a co-op of tenants, was standing nearby watching Adam at work. Steve is a fan of street art – every three months he asks an artist from the neighborhood to come to his corner and “get up a piece.”

Adam, who does the “broken-hearted bunny” you may have seen around the streets of New York, has been doing graffiti since 1980. His piece on Steve Stoppart’s wall recently became the site of a battleground.

“I’m reclaiming my space,” he told us as he sprayed over the black bubble letters someone had scrawled across the piece. “Somebody came along and covered it over in the snowstorm.”

This happens a lot during snowstorms, apparently. “Snow brings the bombers out,” says Steve. “They love to come and get crazy – there’s no cops out!”
