Speaking of artistic tributes to the neighborhood, here’s the latest mural to go up on the E&S Wholesome Foods wall, on Essex Street. No, it doesn’t say “Welcome to the LES, now leave,” but close!

This one’s by Marty Mar, who’s no stranger to the wall. When Garrett Wasserman painted a quaint “Lower East Side Story” mural over Mar’s previous work, Clayton Patterson, whose home and gallery is next-door, took a stand against it: “To be honest,” Patterson wrote, “Wasserman probably does not mean to be an asshole – he just doesn’t get it. He probably thinks his mural is better than Marty Mar’s, yet without having any understanding of local history or how few opportunities are out there for those who grew up in the neighborhood.”

After the harsh words, Wasserman’s mural got even harsher treatment, and got tagged with the letters “LES.” We’ll see if this one fares better.
