Joseph Black and Ray Schwab had planned to release an album as Honeydrum, but for their new LP — out today via Greenpoint’s Captured Tracks — their name is Donovan Blanc.

Recorded in Black’s basement in New Jersey, the duo’s latest material is “wildly different from what we were working on before,” Schwab explained. “So we felt it was appropriate to almost start with a clean slate.” While Honeydrum was lo-fi pop, Donovan Blanc feels a bit more mellow, brooding, even heroin chic.

Asked to explain the new name, Schwab waxed sardonic: “Donovan Blanc is a chef that makes really great tripe and he’s a friend of our friend Raul Blanc. We just wanted to pay him an homage.” Okay.

Fresh off the Captured Tracks showcase at Northside Festival, the duo next plays with CYMBALS at Glasslands on July 19. We caught them at Baby’s All Right for an exclusive live performance of “Without a Thing to Doubt.”
