Here’s What Justin Strauss Dropped at Panther Room Last Night

Welcome to Last Night’s Playlist, in which our favorite DJs share the tunes they played last night.

For the very first instalment of Last Night’s Playlist, we’re pleased to feature a living nightlife legend, Justin Strauss. Strauss has been keeping folks dancing for decades – since well before the “death of New York nightlife” (i.e. Michael Alig’s incarceration). He’s played at infamous institutions like Area, Danceteria, Limelight and Tunnel. He’s remixed Tina Turner. He’s worked with Depeche Mode. And even after over three decades of spinning, remixing and producing, Strauss is still at the forefront of what’s fresh – under the moniker a/jus/ted – a collaborative project with Teddy Stuart – he’s remixed everyone from Holy Ghost! to Blood Orange.

Here are just a few tunes Strauss played yesterday evening at Output‘s Panther Room during his back to back set with Eric Duncan aka Dr Dunks. If you like what you hear, you can catch Strauss tomorrow night at the Bossa Nova Civic Club.

Take a Selfie With This 13-Foot-Long Dragon Tonight at UCB East

A beast will descend on the Beast tonight! Behold the 13-foot-long dragon that will appear in “The Golden Nipple Ring” at UCB East.

For the past year, Matt Dennie and Josh Sharp have hosted a monthly variety show called Cool Shit/Weird Shit. “It’s a very East Villagey type show and we aim to do old-school performance stuff that you would’ve seen back in the day at Luna Lounge,” Dennie wrote in an e-mail, referring to the bygone Ludlow Street venue. “Stuff that is cool and weird and doesn’t fit into the typical stand-up, sketch, improv mold.”

If You’re a Saved By the Bell Fan, Get Ready to Sing ‘I’m So Excited’

BELDINGNot only is it a great time to be a William S. Burroughs fan, but if you’re a Saved By the Bell fan, you’re living in the midst of a veritable Zack-and-Kelly renaissance.

Remember Dennis Haskins, the actor who played Mr. Belding? Well, on Feb. 7 and 8, he’s making a guest appearance in Bayside! The Musical!,  the outrageously raunchy parody of SBTB that’s been playing at Theatre 80 on St. Marks Place. The Bayside principal’s catch phrase — “What is going on here?” — is a big part of the musical and (spoiler alert) eventually leads to a 4 Non Blondes cover that’s one of its more hilarious numbers. So, yeah, this should be pretty epic.

A man was shot outside of the Borinquen Plaza Houses in Bushwick today.

We don’t yet have a description of the victim, but an officer at the crime scene shortly after 5 p.m. thought he was likely to survive. Cops on the scene were overheard saying the man, found on the ground near McKibbin Street, had been shot once in the arm and twice in the leg. A police spokesperson said it was too early to confirm any details.

The incident occurred less than a block from Humboldt Street YMCA.

Tonight Woodsman will play a midnight set at Mercury Lounge, the Lower East Side venue that accommodates up to 250. But on a given week the band’s guitarist, Mark Demolar, can be found tapping his effects pedals in a mellower, more intimate setting — for 10 vinyasa yoga students in Bushwick.

William S. Burroughs Junkies, Get Ready For the Ultimate Fix

Don’t expect him to trend on Twitter or anything, but William S. Burroughs might at least be the stuff of party chatter in the coming months, thanks in part to a meaty new biography by Beat chronicler Barry Miles and an upcoming celebration of the dapper degenerate’s 100th birthday. WSB100, as the month-long centenary blowout is being dubbed, won’t take place till April, but you’ll have a couple of glorious opportunities to bask in all things Burroughs in the next days.

Watch The Can’t Tells Rock Out in Their Living Room Before Their Gig at Pianos

The Can’t Tells have seen their slice of Bushwick evolve since moving from Boston six years ago. The trio of Berklee School of Music grads arrived in the city with a couple hundred dollars and a few garbage bags of clothing to their name. Roberta’s had just opened, serving only pizza — no heat in the building.

Each member sought to break into the NYC scene on his own, but fate had different plans. The roommates became bandmates, and last October they released their debut album, No Television, via British label Medical Records. Tonight, The Can’t Tells play Pianos at 10 p.m. Check out our Play Room session of them performing “Nothing Heavy” live in their living room for a taste of tonight’s set.

DIY or Die! Surveying the Post-285 Future of Brooklyn’s Underground(-ish) Venues

(Courtesy of Death by Audio)

(Photo: Dylan Johnson, @giantclick)

It seems the dust has finally settled over at 285 Kent following a farewell weekend packed with frothy debauchery, nostalgia-tinged obituaries and, of course, jaded shoulder shrugs. Emerging from the haze is a consensus that the Man, in all its frightening manifestations — aka the police, stroller-pushing Williamsburg yuppies, the city’s ever increasing wealth gap, and what’s known as the Bottle Club Law — can’t kill the spirit of the underground, after-hours, and DIY that inspired 285 Kent.

So what’s next?

10 Funny Things Allison Williams Said at the Apple Store Last Night

(Photo: Natalie Weber)

(Photo: Natalie Weber)

Girls star Allison Williams did not come in character to her Q&A last night at Soho’s Apple Store. While we regretted the missed opportunity for a Marnie TED Talk, Williams was lovely — in a blousy, pink patterned dress, with black tights and heels — and her conversation with Harper’s BAZAAR executive editor Laura Brown was as silly as we could have hoped for. These were Williams’s best quips.

Hey, Kids! It’s Larry Clark’s Birthday Tonight at Baby’s All Right

(Photo: Susanna Howe)

A healthy, happy Larry Clark will set off his 71st birthday at Baby’s All Right in Williamsburg tonight with free food and drink. “By midnight we should all be fucked up,” his site promises.

The photographer-filmmaker has reason to celebrate: after a near death experience and major surgery, Clark had a minor epiphany and, earlier this month, sold off thousands of his 4×6 and 5×7 color prints for only $100 a piece — a gift to his fans who wouldn’t usually be able to afford his work.
