The #HovaHoax of 2013 might just be the biggest punking since Radiohead was a no-show at Zuccotti Park. Because there apparently weren’t enough free shows going on this weekend, someone started a rumor that Jay-Z (er, Jay Z) was doing a surprise gig — not at his own Barclays Center, where the MTV Music Video Awards went down Sunday, but on Troutman Street in Bushwick.

Questlove’s site Okayplayer tweeted a “rumor alert” — picked up by Bushwick Daily and others — that the show would happen at noon on Saturday. Diddy’s RevoltTV seemed to confirm it — adding that Justin Timberlake and Beyonce would be there — but later retracted their tweet, leaving a couple of hundred Bushwick residents (and some cops, per our contributor Sam Blum) to stand around without anything awesome to Instagram.

Comedian Jessie Richardson saw the bright side, tweeting, “But regardless of the false Jay-Z concert, great for Bushwick businesses. Bodega Bar gettin’ some much deserved love today!”

Here’s footage from the fiasco, titled “Jay-Z mind-controls hipsters in Bushwick” on YouTube (audio NSFW).
